Symposium 2‐3 July 2014 in Kiel
Research, teaching and practice are names given to the activity of producing, disseminating and exercising of knowledge. This division of labour is mirrored by the differentiation of academic institutions. The Humboltian University focuses on research and theory‐based teaching, leaving practice-oriented teaching to the Fachhochschule. The Kunsthochschule, although has university-equivalent status, devotes also to practice-oriented teaching.
Academic institutions are known to be resistant to change, but social organizations however stubborn, do not stand still. In the past 15 years, we see developments realigning the institutions with the keystone activities. One such development might be called Art & Design Research Movement. The currents of research, strong or weak, fast or slow, have reached Art and Design Schools from above, bottom or sideway.
Muthesius Kunsthochschule was the first one to be a member of Excellent Initiative Research Clusters. This symposium, commissioned by Wissenschaftszentrum Kiel, aims to build on the knowledge gained and takes it further. It goes after the intermingling of research, teaching and practice in Design. Except for Medical Science, very few academic disciplines engage systematically in all three activities. Even there, the flow of knowledge is not automatic and must be deliberately channelled and maintained. Much has been said and done in Design Research, but little attention has been paid to this aspect. With our invited guests and delegates, we will reflect and debate on the relationship between design and knowledge construction, exchange and utilization; and how these are and should be cultivated in research, teaching and practice.
